PLEASE TAKE ACTION (PLEASE CALL or EMAIL CT DCF Commissioner Joette Katz, see below):
"Connecticut Department of Children and Families has moved a 16-year-old trans girl out of its own custody and into an adult male prison. Though it is apparently the general practice of the CT Department of Corrections to place transgender inmates by their biological sex, which is a huge problem in and of itself, placing a young girl in an adult male prison is, I hope needless to say, especially awful and dangerous. Trans women face extraordinary levels of violence in society in general, and this girl's life and safety are at great risk right now.
Advocates also fear that allowing this transfer to stand will set a bad precedent for all youth, since it's extremely rare for DCF to transfer any juveniles to adult facilities where, as here, there are no criminal charges against the young person in question. You can read more about this in this article, where the girl is ambiguously referred to throughout as "the youth" due to the media's awkward and terrible relationship with trans people.
Long story short, please call or email DCF Commissioner Joette Katz and tell her 1) they are deliberately putting a young person in harm's way; 2) that they must take her back into custody (they can do so without going to court) and 3) that she should be placed in a DCF facility for girls. Commissioner Katz's number is 860-982-9600; commissioner.dcf@ct.gov. I am told by someone more in the know than I am that public pressure has started to make DCF rethink its decision, and a bunch of calls and emails couldn't hurt." -via Adrien A. Weibgen
